No senior will be without Christmas this year in Lansing, Mich., thanks to a growing partnership and a few extra conveyer belts.
“No Senior Without Christmas” delivers boxes of household supplies and non-perishable food to seniors in need living in three counties in the Lansing, Mich., area. Meijer Leaders in the region first started supporting the program in 2018 when a local police department alerted the community of a lack of funding for the event.
This year, after learning that there’s usually a waiting list to receive these items, Meijer donated $7,000 in gift cards to the program, which allowed an additional 50 seniors to receive boxes. Organizers of the event shopped for the items at our Okemos store, filling 400 boxes this year.
“We are happy to support No Senior Without Christmas every year, but this year it was even more special,” Okemos Store Director Ron Colson said. “While this year has been difficult on everyone, it has been especially isolating for seniors, which makes it more important than ever to show seniors in our communities that we are here for them this holiday season.”
Normally, Meijer team members lend a hand to pack the boxes at a local fire station. But, due to COVID-19, volunteers were limited this year. In order to help packing day go smoother with fewer hands, the store partnered with our Lansing distribution center to allow the group to borrow conveyor sections for event day.
