Drug Take-back

Unused medications can have harmful effects, including polluting waterways and the environment if they are flushed or thrown in the trash. They can also cause personal harm through misuse.

In 2019, Meijer launched a drug take-back program in each of our supercenters across the Midwest to help solve this problem in the communities we serve. Our drug take-back kiosks, located near the pharmacy within each of our stores, are a safe way to properly dispose of unused, unwanted or expired medications.

The program supports a growing community need to have access to a safe method for disposing unused medications. According to the 2018 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, nearly 10 million Americans misused controlled prescription drugs. The study shows that a majority of the abused prescription drugs were obtained from family and friends, often from the home medicine cabinet.
