Each year, the Detroit Public Safety Foundation honors Detroit police officers, firefighters and EMS personnel for going "Above & Beyond" the call of duty at its Above & Beyond Awards Ceremony at the Detroit Opera House.
The foundation also recognizes community partners for their support of first responders. This year, we were pleased to receive the James B. Nicholson City Change Maker Award at the event. The award recognizes our ongoing commitment to the city of Detroit, as well as its first responders.
“At Meijer, our mission is to enrich lives in the communities we serve. Being a Michigan company, Detroit holds special importance to us because of the significance of this city to our state,” said Tony Moore, Meijer Regional Vice President, who accepted the award. “Detroit is truly an iconic place, and we are pleased to be growing alongside it.”
The award comes only a few weeks after we opened our third Detroit store, Rivertown Market. The market is our fourth small format store, which are all designed to uniquely embody the spirit of the city their located in, from the local products on the shelves to the art that hangs on the walls. The three other market format stores are located in Royal Oak, Lansing and Grand Rapids.
“We aim to support this city, its families and its community in many ways – from sponsoring local sports teams to helping fill the shelves of its food pantries through our Simply Give program – but one thing I’m personally proud of is our commitment to veterans,” Tony said.
Given the challenges of the last 2 years, we’ve made special efforts to ensure the health of Detroiters, from donating masks to first responders to holding mass flu shot and COVID-19 vaccine clinics in the city.
“I’m proud of the role we were able to play in protecting this city,” Tony said. “We’re proud to be able to support Detroit and look forward to continuing to invest in this city for years to come.”
It was a special honor to be recognized alongside the Detroit Pistons and so many incredible first responders at this year’s event.
