Meijer recently partnered with the Special Olympics of Kentucky and the Florence Freedom to host the inaugural Special Olympics Saturday at UC Health Stadium in Florence, Kentucky. Each Saturday this summer Special Olympics athletes from across the state will compete on the baseball field in different Special Olympic events pre-game.
On May 14, we presented the Special Olympics Saturday Opening Ceremony, welcoming Special Olympics athletes from across the state for the opening ceremony of the season of Special Olympic games. We kicked off the start of the Special Olympic Saturdays series with a parade of athletes around the field and a pre-game torch-lighting by the Florence Freedom followed by watching the Freedom game with all of the Special Olympics athletes.
The Special Olympic Saturdays events include Special Olympics sports such as softball, track and softball toss competitions. Following each Special Olympics pre-game event, athletes participate in a medal ceremony.
