Meijer has been committed to buying local produce ever since our founder, Hendrik Meijer, opened the first Meijer store 80 years ago out of his barber shop in Greenville, Mich. In fact, one of our earliest relationships is with Miedema and Sons, a farm near Byron Center, Mich. that first began delivering produce to that Greenville store in the late 1930s.
Today, six of the fourth-generation family members are involved in farming more than 1,500 acres and are pleased to still be supplying fresh produce like cabbage, sweet corn and winter and summer squash to Meijer.
Miedema and Sons is among more than 100 other local growers that we work with in our five-state footprint of Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio and Kentucky, representing an economic impact of more than $80 million annually. This commitment has made Meijer one of the largest purchasers of many fruits and vegetables in the Midwest.
