Meijer Gives Away 30M Free Prescriptions Since 2006

Meijer pharmacies marked a major milestone late last month when it dispensed its 30 millionth free prescription through its free prescription program. The program has saved customers more than $422 million since October 2006 when it launched.
Meijer filled 3 million free prescriptions for atorvastatin calcium – the generic substitute for Lipitor®, the cholesterol-lowering medication – in 2015, saving customers $37.7 million. Other medications in the program include:
- Metformin, the most commonly-prescribed drug for type 2 diabetes: 1.4 million free prescriptions filled in 2015 saved customers $10.6 million.
- Leading oral generic antibiotics, primarily for children: 1.3 million free prescriptions filled in 2015 saved customers $10 million.
- Prenatal vitamins: 540,000 prescriptions filled in 2015 saved customers $11 million.
